She is yours now, and you must\r\ntake care of what has been\r\ngiven. Brush her hair, help her\r\ninto her little coat, hold her hand, \r\nespecially when crossing a street. For, think,\r\n\r\nwhat if you should lose her? Then you would be\r\nsorrow yourself; her drawn face, her sleeplessness\r\nwould be yours. Take care, touch\r\nher forehead that she feel herself not so\r\n\r\nutterly alone. And smile, that she does not\r\naltogether forget the world before the lesson. \r\nHave patience in abundance. And do not\r\never lie or ever leave her even for a moment\r\n\r\n\r\nby herself, which is to say, possibly, again, \r\nabandoned. She is strange, mute, difficult, \r\nsometimes unmanageable but, remember, she is a child. \r\nAnd amazing things can happen. And you may see, \r\n\r\n\r\nas the two of you go\r\nwalking together in the morning light, how\r\nlittle by little she relaxes; she looks about her; \r\nshe begins to grow.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #999999;\">From <em>Red Bird<\/em>, published by Beacon Press.
