“The Wind Will Show Its Kindness” by Meister Eckhart

A man born blind can easily deny
the significance of a vast landscape.

He can easily deny
all the wonders that he cannot touch,
smell, taste, or hear.

But one day the wind will show its kindness
and remove the tiny patches that cover your eyes,

And you will see God more clearly
than you have ever seen yourself.

This is a puzzling poem that provokes contemplation. What do you make of it?

  1. The word ‘wind’ here is a metaphor for the word God, or
Divine. Maybe I should have capitalized the word ‘wind,’ or
at least put it in italic.

And was glad to recently give a link to this website — The
Province of Joy in a recent blog I posted, titled: ‘Admit
Something’, which are the first two words in a Hafiz poem reprinted at this site. this site.

And this Meister Eckhart poem-rendering …. is too from that
Penguin anthology — Love Poems from God.

  2. Thank you for these beautiful translations. The GIFT truly an extraordinary gift that awakens the soul to the innumerable wonders of being embodied. I have come to know each poem by heart. They illuminated my passage through the dark night of the soul and spirit. How often I find myself calling out with tremendous longing, “Where is my Hafiz”? Then pick up the GIFT, say a solemn payer with it pressed between my hands, raise it to my lips and gently kiss it, then open it to where it opens. Always just what I need when I need it.
